José Ramón Larraz is best known for his sleazy, lesbian bloodsucker classic Vampyres, but that same year he produced the much less trashy, more atmospheric film, SYMPTOMS starring British actress Angela Pleasance.
Mondo Macabro founder Pete Tombs explains the film's tone in his book Immoral Tales, "Although the plot is simple the film is a somber and complex affair that implicates everybody and everything. As the story progresses, the tension builds, the questions mount and the line between fantasy and reality becomes blurred..."
After appearing at the Cannes Film Festival in 1974, the movie descended into obscurity, never to be released on home video. The only way to see it was through the tape-trading underground with a ratty copy recorded from British TV in the '80s. But now after 15 years of searching and negotiating with the help of the BFI (British Film Institute), Mondo Macabro will be releasing SYMPTOMS on Blu-ray with a brand new HD transfer of the recently discovered negatives.
Like their last couple of Blu-ray releases, MM will be releasing a Limited Edition (of 500) with exclusive extras and art on their WEBSTORE before the retail edition hits the streets at a currently undisclosed date.
A psychopathic lesbian, Helen Ramsey (Angela Pleasence), and her friend Anne (Lorna Heilbron) drive down to a country house to relax fora few weeks. Also on the estate is Brady (Peter Vaughan), the odd job man, who reveals to Anne that Helen often brought friends to the estate, and that the last one had disappeared mysteriously. Anne meanwhile is under pressure from her boyfriend to return to town, and also feels uncomfortable in the old country house. She pledges to stay for just a few more days whilst Helen recuperates.
