FANTOM KILER is the Sleaziest of Sleazy Slashers

aka Fantom Killer

Director: Roman Nowicki

Cast: Eliza Borecka, Katarzyna Zelnik, Magda Szymborska, Andrej Jass

Teraz Films / Color / NTSC R0 / Unrated / Varying Aspect Ratios / Dolby Stereo / Language: Polish / Subtitles: English / 90 min.

(NOTE: This DVD is currently out of print.)

"WARNING: EXTREME EROTIC HORROR!!" boasts the cover of this Polish sleaze-filled, zero budget, giallo/slasher curiosity, Fantom Kiler. As someone like me (and most of my readers) who is always looking for something different, entertaining and challenging, how could I not pick this up right away? Well, mostly due to my unfamiliarity with it. I have been seeing it, as well as its subsequent sequels, on different genre DVD websites for a couple of years but never pulled the trigger until now. The cover looks as lurid and boundary pushing as anything I have ever seen. And after reading the synopsis, I just had to see it.

Franco Nero is the Gunslinger Known as... DJANGO!

Director: Sergio Carlucci

Cast: Franco Nero, Angel Alvarez, Eduardo Fajardo, Loredana Nusciak, Jose Bodalo

Blue Underground / Region A / Unrated / 1.66:1 widescreen / ITALIAN & ENGLISH DTS-HD mono / ENGLISH, SPANISH, FRENCH subtitles / 91 minutes

Extras: The One And The Only: Interviews / The Last Pistolero / Western, Italian Style: A 1968 Documentary / International Trailer / Italian Trailer / Franco Nero Intro

As you more than likely know, the Quentin Tarantino feature film Django Unchained is just the most recent incarnation of the character known as "Django". Django has appeared in at least 30 unofficial sequels that were not written or directed by Sergio Corbucci or starring Franco Nero. The only one that comes close is Django 2: il grande ritorno aka Django Strikes Again or Django Rides Again from 1987 which does feature Nero as the titular character but is written and directed by Nello Rossati (aka "Ted Archer"). In that pile of Italian western madness, the character is never the same and there is little to no continuity. The only reason they exist is because of the success of the nastily violent, ultra cool original.

Lamond and Not Quite Hollywood Director Mark Hartley / Not Quite Hollywood Out-takes with Actress Glory Annen, Director John D. Lamond, and Cinematographer Garry Washout / John Lamond Trailer Reel

Aussie filmmaker John D. Lamond made a couple of very good sex documentaries, The ABCs of Love & Sex: Australia Style and Australia After Dark, before filming his first feature film Felicity. Lamond was inspired by Just Jackie's classic 1974 erotic drama Emmanuelle (starring the amazing Sylvia Kristel) which was set in Bangkok and had a classy "Singapore Airlines TV commercial" look. Lamond told Mondo Stumpo*, "they had nice fashion, good photography and nice music. And that way it dresses it up and makes it all chocolate boxy. Because they did it with The Story Of O and they did it with the first Emmanuelle, which was partially in Bangkok. The second one which was in Hong Kong. And we’d been influenced by those films." So he set off to Hong Kong to do the bulk of the outside shots and Melbourne, Australia with production designer Stephen Walsh to do the inside set pieces.

This X-Rated documentary is a LABOR OF LOVE

Director(s): Robert Flaxman and Daniel Goldman

Vinegar Syndrome / NTSC All / Unrated / 1.85:1 Widescreen / English Mono / 67 minutes

Extras: Q&A with co-director Robert Flaxman / Original Theatrical Trailer

In 1975 Iranian cum Chicagoan filmmaker Henri Charr–whose erratic resume contains horror, women-in-prison and even kids movies–wanted to make an exploitation film about prostitution but with a twist; the escorts would be male. But that would make his backers a little nervous so to hedge their bets on their investment, they introduced the caveat that Charr's The Last Affair would have to include hardcore sex scenes. Initially they wanted at least 60% but he talked them down to 20% of the movie that had to contain the scenes. But there is another problem; none of the actors and actresses are porn stars.

Nubile Young Women Possessed by Horny Evil Spirits!

At one point Italian filmmakers seemed kind of obsessed with possessing young women with evil, undead spirits and making them act out in naughty ways. In two of those cases–Malabimba and Satan's Baby Doll (La bimba di Satana)–that isn't where the similarities end. They are both directed by men with the last name Bianchi, set in a gothic castle on the Italian countryside, revolve around a dysfunctional plutocratic family, have a character who's an invalid uncle and their Italian titles contain the word "bimba" which means "child" or "baby". When broken down "Malabimba" means "bad child" and "La bimba di Satana" translates to "The baby of Satan" or "Satan's Baby Doll". The details of the plots and the tone of each movie are different, but being so similar, I would call them "sister films" and they make for a great sleazy double-feature.

Following the blueprints laid out by Marvel's merry band of mutants, writers Noboru Iguchi (story who also co-directors) and Jun Tsugita (screenplay) created a Japanese splatter version of The X-Men. Between the two scribes, they have titles like The Machine Girl, RoboGeisha and Zombie Ass: Toilet of the Dead under their belts. Iguchi even wrote some hardcore pink films like Hard Porno and Bondage Desire. Taking into consideration fellow co-directors and actors Yoshihiro Nishimura (Tokyo Gore Police) and Tak Sakaguchi (Versus and Battlefield Baseball), you pretty know what to expect here, right? Well, if you don't, hold on to your hats because here we go...

Director(s): Howard Ziehm, Richard Kanter

Cast(s): Kari Klark, Kevin Thompson, Tracy Walton, Serena, Lesllie Bovee, John Leslie

Vinegar Syndrome / All Region / XXX / 1.85:1 widescreen / Dolby Digital mono / 78 min (Star) 76 min (Encounters)

Extras: Commentary with Howard Ziehm (Star Virgin) / Biographical audio interview with actor Job Martin (Sexual Encounters)

There are some classic adult film directors that you know right offhand if you are a fan of the genre; Gerard Damiano (Devil in Miss Jones), Carter Stevens (Teenage Twins), Shaun Costello (Water Power) and many more. A couple of names you may not know are Howard Ziehm and Richard Kanter, both of whom made at least one movie that you probably know and might even love. Ziehm's 1974 sci-fi parody Flesh Gordon has become a cult classic, even known outside of porn fandom. The lesser known of the two is probably Kanter who, while not having a break-out hit the likes of Flesh Gordon, did hit a couple of home runs with some really hot sleepers including Fantasy in Blue (1975) and my favorite, Desires Within Young Girls (1977) starring a bevy of legendary stars. A couple of titles you may not be privy to are the science-fiction comedic anthology Star Virgin and Sensual Encounters of Every Kind by Ziehm and Kanter respectively.

Is Alice Cooper a werewolf or a MONSTER DOG?

Director: Claudio Fragasso

Cast: Alice Cooper, Victoria Vera, Carlos Santurio

Scorpion Releasing / Region A / Unrated / 1.85:1 (1080p) widescreen / DTS-HD Master Audio / 84 minutes

Extras: "Lord of the Dogs" featurette with interviews from Fragasso, Rossella Drudi and Roberto Bessi / Trailer

You may not be familiar with the name Claudio Fragasso but you are probably familiar with Bruno Mattei, a regular collaborator of Fragasso. The two co-directed a couple of films for which Mattei is known and Fragasso was uncredited like Hell of the Living Dead, Women's Prison Massacre and Scalps. The duo also took over for Lucio Fulci on Zombie 3 (actually a sequel to Fulci's Zombie, which was also called Zombi 2, implying that it was a sequel to Romero's Dawn of the Dead which was entitled Zombi in Italy) after he fell ill in the middle of the production. With the monetary backing of the infamous Joe D'Amato, Fragasso directed a few exploitation classics by himself like La Casa 5: Beyond Darkness, Troll 2 (this one will get is own review in the near future, WOW!) and the bizarre werewolf movie, Monster Dog, starring rockstar Alice Cooper.
