Cinema Sewer (Book Review)
Since starting this site (actually since I began The Playground Movie Reviews blog four years ago or so) I have learned so much about the many exploitation genres and their seemingly countless offshoot sub-genres. The more I learn, the more I have surmised that there are many levels to depravity and sickness in the world of cinema. Fringe exploitation, nay fringe erotica, nay nay fringe PORN may just be the bottom of the barrel when it comes to said depravity and sickness. In these four years I have made it my goal to seek out the most fucked up – yet interesting and engrossing – content available. In order to do that, I have turned to such classic genre literature as Nathaniel Thompson’s DVD Delirium library, Nightmare U.S.A. by Stephen Thrower and Bill Landis’ Sleazoid Express to educate myself.
But now I have found the sleaziest of the sleaze, the dirtiest of the dirt and the funniest of the fun – Robin Bougie’s 
Cinema Sewer Vol. 1. This is a collection of Mr. Bougie’s first 12 issues (plus over 100 pages of extra, updated stuff!) of his fantastic exploitation movie magazine/comic book in which he: reviews some of the raunchiest and most perverted movies you will ever hear about, weird TV shows from around the world and more; editorializes on the state of the world and the dumb fuckers in it; schools you on classic porn legends and myths; and tons of other cool shit, like some of the sickest and most outrageously hilarious illustrations and cartoons ever. Robin is a fucking twisted genius with one of the most disgusting senses of humor I have ever encountered. And to follow up that point, if you buy your copy of Cinema Sewer from Robin’s website, he will personalize your copy with an original – and surely offensive - illustration just for you. Which, if my copy is any indication, it is completely worth it to get it straight from the man.
Robin and his team of collaborators (one of whom is his extremely talented wife Rebecca Dart) who help out with the magazine are treasure troves (what the fuck is a “trove” anyway?) of knowledge, creativity, talent and perversion. Bougie himself has to be a little neurotic about his work though. The man hand lettered every one of the pages in the magazine and subsequently all 186 pages of this collection. It’s either a testament to his patience and talent or he is one koo-koo motherfucker. Either way, it is just one incredible thing about this book. Whether you are into horror, exploitation, classic XXX or just want to be grossed out and laugh your ass off, you won’t find a more enjoyable way than to just pick up a copy of Vol. 1 today! By the way, the first printing is out of print (although if you act fast, Robin may still have a couple stashed away) but a second run will be available some time this month (June 2009) according to Robin. Also, be on the look-out for Vol. 2 on sale in June as well (WOOHOO!). Although as of this article Robin doesn’t know an exact date, so again, keep checking in with the man!
