Cloistered Nun: Runa’s Confession (1976, Review)

aka Shudojo Runa no kokuhaku

Director: Masaru Konuma

Cast: Runa Takamura

Kino Video / Color / Unrated / NTSC R1 / Widescreen 1.85:1 (Anamorphic) / JAPANESE: Dolby Digital Stereo / ENGLISH Subtitles / 72 Minutes / PURCHASE

The nun in question, Runa, leaves the convent to seek out her half-sister and former love who betrayed her and led her to seek out God. She finds them and tells them of a prime piece of land that the church is selling cheap and if they buy it, they can flip it and make a lot of money. Lying, cheating and lots of sex ensue as everyone involved has ulterior motives and no one is getting what they bargained for.

That doesn’t sound like your typical “nunsploitation” flick, does it? It’s because this movie is billed as a classic nun exploitation movie, but it’s far from it. That is not to say that it’s a bad movie. In fact, it works very well as pinku eiga or “pink film”. Basically it’s a Japanese softcore sexploitation flick. The opening scene gave promise of a good old-fashioned, sleaze-filled romp into the sexually repressed world of the Catholic church, but quickly turns to something more.

Aside from the copious amounts of skin and sex, there is a pretty decent story here of love, betrayal and revenge. Runa is hurt by 3 people; her half sister, her ex-love, and the American priest at the convent. All have wronged her and in the end, all will pay… literally. The heartbreak of her love and repression of the convent gave Runa reason to “get hers” and make herself happy in the end. And she does… with lots of money… and a lesbian nun that she’s in love with… and a dude they picked up while on their way to Australia to fuck…

If you are in the mood for some well made pink cinema that disguises itself as nunsploitation, pick this up. You won’t be disappointed. I mean come on, there is nun salad tossing and an almost humorous “gang rape” scene that has to be seen to believed. So see it… then believe it. And add some French dressing to the salad. It’s outstanding.
