The reign of insanity continues as another bat shit crazy Japanese movie bleeds into domestic release. Those of you familiar with this trend will more than likely embrace DeadBall, though the emphasis is very much on the comedy this time. Imagine The Naked Gun crashing headfirst into Tokyo Gore Police. Like The Naked Gun, or any spoofy comedy, some jokes will work, some won’t, and others will make your eyes roll and say “Oh come on” under your breath. Most Japanese horror ficks’ humor are a by-product of the plot, while DeadBall is intentionally trying to make you laugh. I give this one a “Thumb’s Up” because I did have a good time, but I also know this will divide some audiences because the humor can be pretty stupid at times. Continue reading

Director Mark Herrier’s 1991 fright flick titled Popcorn is one that I’ve had my eye on for a while, not only for the sake of viewing for the first time, but also to add to my horror collection. It’s been out of print since January of 2010, making it an even more desirable acquisition for any fan of over-the-top schlocky genre fare. There are a few DVD copies of it up for grabs on Ebay within the $90 – $100 price range, but I figured I’d need to check it out first to decide if it’s worthy of breaking the budget. I made my weekly visit to my go-to movie slinger here in Edmonton, Kevin Martin (owner of my hometown’s only Alt/Cult/Underground movie rental shop, The Lobby). Sure enough, he still had a copy of Popcorn on the shelf for rental. Continue reading

Evil Dead (2013, Theater Review)

EvilDead2013PosterDirector: Fede Alvarez

Cast: Shiloh Fernandez, Jane Levy, Lou Taylor Pucci, Jessica Lucas, Elizabeth Blackmore

——————–

Approximately a year ago when rumours of an Evil Dead remake started circulating around genre news websites, horror fans everywhere scoffed at the idea. As a long-time devotee of all things horror, I have always been partial to the slasher sub-genre. That is to say that I wouldn’t consider myself a “die-hard” fan of the Evil Dead franchise. But I can say that I recognize and understand the significance of these films within the archives of horror history, and I still adore them almost as much as any of my favorite slasher flicks from the ‘80s. I cringe every time I read news of young up-and-coming filmmakers and big studio execs combining forces to collectively butcher beloved genre classics of the ‘70s and ‘80s, as any horror fan would. News of an Evil Dead remake was no exception, wrenching at my heart strings just as news of any other horror remake has and will inevitably continue to do so as long as people keep making them.
